October 2025, Mental Health Month, we’re moving differently. On World Mental Health Day (10 Oct), SPCI and the Barbados YMCA officially launched the DEEC Life-Skills Challenge, a practical, people-first program for young adults 16–29 who feel the weight of post-COVID stress, hard knocks, and a rough economy. We start Saturday, 18 Oct, 3:00–5:00 p.m. at the Barbados YMCA, Pinfold Street. Limited spaces. First-come, first-served.
Why now
Let’s call it straight: Barbados youths are under pressure. After lockdown years and shaky school-to-work transitions, many are wrestling with anxiety, disappointment, and “outside loud”, cost of living, food insecurity, NCDs, and a spike in serious crimes by under-20s. The daily headlines keep asking for real interventions, not more talk. DEEC is our answer.
What DEEC actually does?
8 weeks in-house cohort learning modules (Saturdays, 3–5 p.m.) to build mindset and soft skills:
Holistic Mental Health & Resilience (we start here)
Who am I? Alignment & Purpose
Entrepreneurial Mindset
Building Influence
The Power of Service
Field Visit
Entering the Workforce — Earning with Integrity
3 weeks practical (off-site): volunteering/shadowing/internships with a simple weekly reflection.
Post-practical money session: Basic Money Management (today-money plan, delay rewards, needs vs wants).
Therapeutic touchpoints (confidential, by request) + follow-up/mentorship so growth continues.
Who it’s for?
Young adults in Barbados who want to steady their head, make better choices, and move with integrity, even if life dragged them sideways. We don’t promise jobs; we build people so opportunities stick when they show up.
Our launch, our why
On World Mental Health Day, we stood with the Barbados YMCA to signal something simple: youth mental health is the silent emergency, and community partnerships are how we treat it, consistently.. Thank you to the Barbados YMCA for opening doors and partnering to host this social support program.
