“Eco-Friendly S.V.G” gets started on Union Island & Bequia from Tuesday November 01st 2016

Citizens across St. Vincent & the Grenadines will be introduced to some education and hands-on training on E-Waste Management, when the GEF-SGP\UNDP funded project “Developing Good Environmental Practices for Managing and Disposal of Hazardous Materials found in E-Waste across St. Vincent & the Grenadines” Phase (2) gets started from Tuesday November 01^st 2016.

Young Certified Trainer of Trainers from SVG who were trained by Regional Consultants Dr. Marcia Brandon, Karlene Gordon of COESL, and Malica Cummins of CEM.Inc based in Barbados; will facilitate residents of Union Island and Bequia and other locations across mainland SVG, as Phase (2) two gets going under the theme “Eco-Friendly SVG”.

Dr. Ashley C. John, Project Coordinator with local non-profit company Constructive Solutions Inc. says, “we are urging citizens to attend our Eco-Friendly SVG community awareness sessions which commence in Union Island on Tuesday November 02nd 2016 6:00 pm and on Bequia on Wednesday November 02^nd at 6:00pm respectively.”

The project seeks to increase awareness and educate the general population on better environmental practices when disposing of Electronic Waste. 

Dr. John further stated, that there are quantities of obsolete and discarded electronic waste found across St. Vincent & the Grenadines, which contain hazardous Chemicals, and there are no structured ways to dispose of electronic waste.

Therefore old computers, cell phones and other such items are dumped next to the road, rivers, buildings and in the landfill; migrating into the water, air and soil, which create an environmental hazard.

There is therefore an urgent need to increase people’s knowledge of hazardous chemicals found in e-waste; educate people on how to properly dispose of e-waste; and finally show people how to create sustainable livelihoods from e-waste.

Poor recycling practices in small developing states such as St. Vincent & the Grenadines magnify health risk due to exposure to lead, mercury and other hazardous materials found in e-waste.

The Solid Waste Management Unit and the Ministry of Youth & Community Development are valuable partners of this project, and we are also happy too see Corporate St. Vincent coming on board, inclusive Bank of SVG and Alliance–Française, who have generously donated their electronic waste to our collection point facility.
